Ph.D. in Mathematics

About the Program

This is an English language program introduced in 2001 by the Mathematics Department of the Central European University (a US-degree granting institute of post graduate study and research, based in Budapest) in cooperation with the Alfréd Rényi Institute of Mathematics.

Scientific aspects

The Department of Mathematics and its Application strives to offer highest level PhD and Masters programs in English, accredited in the United States. The programs are in cooperation with the Alfréd Rényi Institute of Mathematics, home of Abel Prize laureate Endre Szemerédi. In order to broaden the perspectives for students, the department collaborates closely with other universities in Budapest. Our ultimate aim is to enable our diverse student body to become successful and influential professional scientists in the future social and academic life of their home countries and abroad.

Upon graduation, the MS program enables students to become high profile professionals in fields applying for example statistics, financial mathematics or bioinformatics on the one hand, or continue their study for PhD at some prestigious universities around the World in mathematics or science. For PhD, one may work with leading experts for example in algebra (group theory, representation theory), algebraic geometry, approximation theory, combinatorics, computer science, discrete and convex geometry, functional analysis, geometric topology, information theory, mathematical logic, number theory (combinatorial or analytic), partial differential equations, probability theory and stochastic processes, set theory.
